Gerald E. Bertrand

Gerald E. Bertrand ObituaryGerald E. Jerry Bertrand, age 69, formerly of Weymouth and Boston, died peacefully, Saturday, September 24, 2016, at the South Shore Rehabilitation and Skilled Care Center in Rockland. He was born and raised in Quincy and was a graduate of North Quincy High School, Class of 1964 and Bridgewater State College, Class of 1968. He had lived in Scituate for ten years, previously living in Weymouth and Boston. Jerry was a dedicated and popular Social Studies teacher at the Gates Intermediate School in Scituate from 1968 to 2006. In the early 1970s and for many years, Jerry was treasurer of the Scituate Teachers Association and was committed to making their yearly scholarship drive a success. Outside of the classroom and well beyond the requirements of his teaching job, Jerry organized countless ski trips, rock climbing expeditions, and New York weekends. He also chaperoned student visits to Quebec and London. Jerry had a real passion for American history and shared it with his students. He created an interesting and dynamic atmosphere in his classroom at Gates with souvenirs from his travels to Europe and within the U.S. In fact, his ceiling was covered with colorful flags from the various countries of the United Nations. The U.N., the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the World Trade Center were focal points of the many N.Y.C. field trips Jerry organized and chaperoned. On these weekends, Jerry was also able to introduce his students to the New York theatre he so loved. He collected theater bills and posters from plays in Boston, New York, and London, American Indian jewelry from summer road trips to Colorado, Utah, and New Mexico, and sports memorabilia from his favorite teams. Jerry was well-known for his courteous manner, his sense of humor, his perfect penmanship, and his impeccable grammar and spelling. For many years he held a part-time job manning the transcription desk at the Boston Globe, typing and editing stories as the reporters called them in. Former students will remember the chairs in perfect rows, the snack drawer, the surprise notebook checks, and most importantly, a true gentlemans love of teaching. Beloved son of the late Kenneth F. Bertrand and the late Eleanor L. (Bussolini) Bertrand-Wolfgang and her late husband Frank, he was the devoted brother of Kenneth J. Bertrand and his wife Kerry of Quincy; loving uncle of Luke and Caroline. Jerry is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at the Sweeney Brothers Home for Funerals, 1 Independence Avenue, Quincy, Friday, Sept. 30, at 11 oclock. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours at the funeral home on Thursday 4-8 p.m. At the request of the family, interment services will be private.

Thanks so very much for the detailed Obituary on a truly great guy...both younger at North and older. So much fun to read how many things he was involved in and most importantly, everything he seemingly did was "positive" and done so others around him could enrich their own lives through his efforts. His legacy will live on through those he so genuinely touched.  Paco

Frank, I certainly share in your sentiments.  We have lost so many wonderful people from our class, and I was truly saddened to learn of Jerry's recent passing.  We were in many classes together, and looking back now, I realize how mature he always seemed for his age . . . sweet and very intelligent, too!  His students were truly fortunate to have him touch their lives with his gift of teaching.    Linda
