In Memory

John F. Hennessey

John Francis Hennessey July 1, 1946 – April 28, 2023.

From his childhood years he was an avid boater, who has been an active member of the Town River Yacht Club since 1981. He loved to travel with his fiancée, Sandra Newton, taking many trips to Mexico and the Caribbean. He worked at General Dynamics from 1965 to 1986, where he earned his master’s pipefitting license and took many ships out on sea trials. He then went to work at Veolia Energy from 1987 until he retired in 2015. He worked as an instrument and control engineer providing heat for most of Boston. In 1968 John took a cross-country train ride by himself on a Sante Fe Super Chief. He made several stops along the way to see friends. He then flew home from California on a Condor. John was very proud of his home and the retaining walls that he built around our gardens.

He is survived by his fiancée Sandra Newton, the love of his life and partner for 20 years, his sister Kathy Martin, his five children Debbie Unger (Brian Unger), Judi Metcalfe (Tim Metcalfe), Cindy Thornton (Domenic Palumbo), Alicia Newton, and Derek Newton. He was pre-deceased by his son James Allbee, and brother-in-law Jack Martin and several beloved dachshunds. He also leaves behind many life-long friends. He passed peacefully at home surrounded by those who loved him.

John was a cheerful outgoing guy who grew up in Squantum with me and I'm remembering him as the "old friend" that he wrote of me in our high school yearbook. I'm glad he continued his love of boating and that he had a wonderful partner in life for all his adventures. He will be missed. Ginny Garland.
