Dave and I were good friends growing up in Squantum and stayed fairly close thereafter although he lived in the woods of Maine and I stayed in Massachusetts. I can give a rough review of what I remember but some dates may be off.

Dave graduated from the University of Maine in Orono between 1969-1972 in the forestry program. He spent his career with the state of Maine and at one time ran a fishery. We visited him there but I don't remember if it was in the Bangor or Augusta area. I do remember driving for a long time in the woods on a dirt road. He lived in a house owned by the state which was really nice but rustic and he loved it. He really enjoyed his life in the woods and what he was doing. He was married twice and I met his widow at his mothers funeral years after his own funeral. I didn't know that he had died until I had sent a christmas card that was unansered. I believe that he died in 2002.

Growing up I remember him as a lot of fun and willing to try anything. He took off across Quincy Bay in sunfish once with the wind blowing about 30 mph. It took him an hour to get across and back, soaked to his skin and laughing he had so much fun. He, Ralph Morse and I used to race a sailboat together and did pretty well when the wind was blowing hard. The three of us would sit on the edge to hold the boat from going over but push it as hard as it would go. Dave would bail the water out as we sailed so we didn't sink and then jump back to the edge to help hold it down.

As those of you who played football with him knew, he was really strong. We used to ski together and his style was really strange. Instead of doing a normal turn, he was so strong and low to the ground that he could just push his skiis around with no effort. Again I remember him heading straight down the steepest trails with no hesitation with his special style and having a great time.

I find myself thinking of him often but I know he lived his life with few regrets.

Mal, Dave was a great guy. He was my lab partner in Mr. Sadowski's Physics class as well as a friend. Dave and I had many classes together at NQHS. He was built like a fireplug. It is sad he passed away. I am sad and amazed for all the classmates who have passed. I guess we should give thanx for every day we have left because you never know when it will end.
