In Memory

Paul Allan Vodola

Paul Allan Vodola, a long-time resident of Reston, died Wednesday, May 29th at his home. Born May 16th, 1947, in Taunton, Massachusetts, Paul was the oldest child of Daniel Vodola and Jane (McKechnie) Vodola. When Paul was three, the family moved to the Wollaston section of Quincy, Massachusetts. He graduated from North Quincy High School in 1964 and attended Eastern Nazarene College in Wollaston. There he met the love of his life, Ruth Susan "Sue" Young, of Maryland. The two were married in the Eastern Nazarene College Chapel in June of 1971, and enjoyed almost fifty-three years of a very happy marriage.

Paul and Sue lived a number of years in Charlottesville, while Paul worked for his PhD in Math at the University of Virginia. They then moved to Northern Virginia, and Paul soon began a long and very satisfying career at Systems Planning and Analysis, Inc., in Alexandria. Paul liked music very much and took piano lessons for much of his life; in retirement he joined fellow students in performing at nursing homes. He and Sue loved to travel, and made many memorable trips, sometimes with friends. Almost every year they made a return trip to New England to visit family and friends. In later life Paul was an avid amateur genealogist, and he succeeded in making a number of interesting discoveries; one, concerning Susan Tisdale, a Taunton ancestor, was mentioned in the September 2015 issue of the Mayflower Quarterly. He also published several mathematical articles.

Paul is survived by his beloved wife, Sue; a sister, Elisabeth Vodola, of Alexandria, Virginia; his brother-in-law, David Young, and wife, Carolyn, and their family, of Kingston, Massachusetts; and a niece, Elizabeth Prior, of Center Conway, New Hampshire. He will be buried at the Chestnut Grove Cemetery in Herndon, Virginia.
